Cartoon Learning Series

Through USAID's Leveraging Economic Opportunities (LEO) project, Vikāra Institute tested innovative methods for introducing development project staff to market facilitation concepts and practices. Vikāra designed a practical, fun, easy-to-use and experiential learning series comprised of comic-based storybooks. The scenarios are based on real-life examples that represent a market development problem and compare different ways of solving it.

TARGET AUDIENCE: The cartoon learning series can be used by project staff and managers in formal training contexts, informal project meetings, and even individual learning environments.

Training Courses

Vikāra runs practical, participative in person and online training courses for HQ or project teams in donor and practitioner organizations using a range of our cutting edge training tools.

Change Wheels

Vikāra has developed multiple Change Wheels as frameworks and tools to guide users in thinking systemically about possible pathways of change a particular market system may take. Vikāra has designed a Generic Change Wheel (non-sector specific), Agricultural Market System Change Wheel, Financial Market System Change Wheel, and Housing & Construction Market System Change Wheel. Detail on the Agricultural Market System Change Wheel is provided below.

The USAID Feed the Future (FTF) Agricultural Value Chain (AVC) activity designed an Agricultural Market Systems Change Wheel that explores examples of the possible pathways that an agricultural market system may take as the system becomes more inclusive. It considers the patterns of behavior that drive the market system, and the forces that support that change process.

The Change Wheel represents behavior change within core market systems (the inputs distribution network system and the supply chain management system) and behavior change within the systems that act as counterbalances & reinforcements to change that takes place in the core market systems (the agricultural support services systems, business services systems, and other interconnected systems).

The Change Wheel can be used to better understand the relationship between different interventions on the market system, to identify the areas to work on, and to assess which stage of change could be targeted to create a more inclusive market system. The Change Wheel provides a more holistic overview and understanding of system change than a more linear results chain.

The Change Wheel describes the behavior change that the market actors could progress through in order to become more inclusive. The behavior change is categorized by the level of change that may occur: the outer circle of the Change Wheel, indicates early stage change, the middle circle indicates mid-transition stage, and the inner circle indicates the tipping point for the market system to becoming a well-functioning, inclusive system.

Simulation Kits

Vikāra has a rich history of developing highly interactive curricula and training methodologies in the form of simulation kits. Vikāra’s premier simulation kits include Market Systems Simulation, Agri-Inputs Simulation, and  Supply Chain Simulation. The impacts are salient when Vikāra uses these high-quality and interactive kits during in-person trainings. Project staff from (Headquarter to Field) can benefit as well as private sector actors.

Market Systems Simulation

The Market Systems Simulation™ is a highly interactive, experiential training that introduces development practitioners to market systems development approaches. The result is a better understanding of market development intervention options that can be implemented by a project and a better understanding of the overall systemic change that such interventions can bring. The Market Systems Simulation™ is designed to recreate the realities of running a donor-funded development project within the four walls of a training room and give project staff the opportunity to make the kinds of decisions - and deal with the consequences of those decisions - that they must make in the real world. Participants are guided through how to apply their learning within their real-life job roles. Vikāra can facilitate trainings with the Market Systems Simulation kit in either English or Spanish.

Agri-Inputs Simulation

The Agri-Inputs Simulation Training is a highly interactive, experiential training that introduces participants to the systemic implications of new distribution and promotional business investment strategies that could be made by agribusinesses in the agri-inputs sector to result in business growth, improved sales, and better relationships with customers. The Agri-Inputs Market Simulation is designed to recreate the realities of agri-business within the four walls of a training room and give participants the opportunity to make the kinds of decisions -- and deal with the consequences of those decisions -- that agribusinesses must make in the real world. Participants are guided through how to apply their learning to real-life, including clarity on the implications of systemic change.  Vikāra can facilitate trainings with the Agri-Inputs Simulation kit in English, Bengali, Spanish and Portuguese. This simulation is designed to be run with development practitioners, as well as other market actors such as agricultural inputs firms.

Supply Chain Simulation

The Supply Chain Simulation Training introduces participants to the systemic implications of new buying and promotional business investment strategies that can be implemented by buyers and other supply chain management firms, resulting in business growth, improved quality and quantity of products, and better relationships with suppliers. The Supply Chain Simulation is designed to recreate the realities of agri-business within the four walls of a training room and give participants the opportunity to make the kinds of decisions -- and deal with the consequences of those decisions -- that buyers must make in the real world. Participants are guided through how to apply their learning to real-life, including clarity on the implications of systemic change. Vikāra can facilitate trainings with the Supply Chain Simulation kit in English, Bengali, Spanish and Portuguese. This simulation is designed to be run with development practitioners, as well as other market actors such as agricultural buying firms.
